Since its launch in 2023, PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) has been exclusive to PlayStation 5 (PS5). However, the situation is very close to changing. This year we will be able to use a helmet a virtual reality from Sony on PCs, although for this to become a reality we’ll have to invest in an official accessory and cable, and be prepared to lose some of the product’s key immersive features.
The Japanese manufacturer has announced the release of the PS VR2 PC adapter. This is an accessory that will be available starting August 7th on the official PlayStation website and select retailers. It will cost 59.99 euros and will allow us to enjoy various SteamVR games. But before you pull out your wallet, let’s look at some interesting details.
Like other virtual reality headsets, the PS VR2 has a number of requirements for running on a PC. We will need a computer with a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or Windows 11. At the processor level, Sony has set the minimum Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Requires Zen 2 or later architecture.) If we talk about memory, then the minimum is 8 GB.
An important point is the video card. PS VR2 requires at least an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, AMD Radeon RX 5500XT or Radeon RX 6500XT. In any of these cases, the equipment must have a standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort version 1.4 output port. We’ll also need a DisplayPort cable, which is not included with the PS VR2 PC Adapter.
If we meet the requirements, we will simply need to connect the PS VR2 to the PC adapter using a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. The next step is to download applications. PlayStation VR2 and SteamVR
on Steam to customize your helmet. After this, the next step is to purchase and download Steam VR games, but it should be noted that the gameplay on PC will be different. As we noted above, being able to use PS VR2 on our computer has some limitations that will make it less immersive than on PS5. We won’t have HDR, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback (other than vibration), or head-mounted feedback. Likewise, the hardware of the connected PC will determine our experience.
PS VR2 went on sale for €599.99 but can currently be purchased for €499.99. It should be noted that in order to enjoy the immersive experience on PC, you also need we have several alternatives at our disposal. It will all depend on tastes and budget, but SteamVR can work with the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro headsets, for example.
