The used car market has exploded in recent years. After the semiconductor crisis that followed the coronavirus pandemic, used car sales skyrocketed. The problem has become so persistent that really interesting cars under €10,000 have disappeared.
And while prices fell over time, the minimum price for cars eventually rose. In fact, as explained in Motor PassionCheap used sports cars that were once used for fun for a few thousand euros are dead.
prices have risen so much so that the Renault Twingo Sport with 130 hp already forces you to spend more than 15,000 euros. And to get the 180 hp Seat Ibiza Cupra, we are already counting on more than 20,000 euros. Perhaps this is why it makes sense to shell out 40,000 euros if we are looking for a Lamborghini Countach.
What?
But this is impossible!
Well, let’s say 40,000 euros for a Lamborghini Countach is expensive. At least for this Lamborghini Countach.
The Lamborghini Countach looks… and of course it isn’t. And no matter how much the latest Lamborghini Countach has depreciated, finding one that costs less than a tenth of what one of these cars would normally cost (they easily run between €700,000 and €800,000) is cause for suspicion.
But if you’ve always wanted one and you’re really drawn to the aesthetics of the car itself, we can always buy one. At least one that looks similar, because you can find Lamborghini Countach replicas for prices close to 40,000 euros.
This is the story they tell us. Autobuild. The German portal explains that what appeared on used car portals was actually a replica built by Saier Automobilbau, a German coachbuilder that specialized in imitating 80s and 90s supercars, building its replicas on much larger and cheaper car bases, such as the Volkswagen Beetle.
At the same time, as German media explain, Graphographer’s Course It is also based on the modern Beetle and has the engine and transmission of a third-generation Volkswagen Golf with a VR6 engine, a famous engine for that time, since it was a kind of V6 (it was narrower than the traditional ones) that the Germans developed with a power of up to 300 hp. In its first versions, the engine reached a power of 174 hp, which is exactly what this Lamborghini Countach by Volkswagen has.
The reason for the high price for the replica could also be the small number of cars produced by Saier Automobilbau. The company apparently entered into legal battles with some brands. For example, the BMW M1 was one of the causes of the dispute, as representatives of Bavaria threatened the replica company with a lawsuit.
IN Autobuild They explain that several units of the Sayer Catapult, as the machine is actually called, were made, but there is no exact number of how many of them might survive.
In Spain we are also very familiar with this type of replica. Some companies use the Toyota MR-2 base to “dress” the car in the desired shape using fiberglass. The simplest imitations using this car as a starting point (which must be provided by the client) are usually the Ferrari 360 Modena imitations.
