The Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)announced last Wednesday that some neutral bathrooms in the same. Through a publication posted on his account Twitterthe School of Medicine He said that neutral bathrooms promote new forms of community integration “from a paradigm of coexistence that favors plurality.”

It was also reported that the restrooms are located on the first floor of building B, to one side of Integral First Contact Area.

The publication had some comments in favor, and others against it. One of the followers of the page commented that while students demand security in and around Ciudad Universitaria, UNAM installs neutral bathrooms.

Another of the users commented that “it is the greatest stupidity for our faculty that fosters risks of sexual connotation” (sic). Another one pointed out “Better make a study plan that includes a compatible medical internship for students with children.”

“Better put paper in the bathrooms, there never is… and then they wash them all at the same time and you can’t go to any…”, said another.

“I consider it a mistake, I hope I’m wrong, as a society in our country we are not yet ready for this. Hopefully I was wrong and there is not something to regret in the short term; and that the education of those who are in the faculty is at the expected level”, was another of the negative comments.

On the other hand, some agreed and were happy with the news. “What excellent news”, “Excellent proposal. Congratulations on being consistent with the plural university and diversity that we have and need”.

Last August 16, 2022, the Faculty of Chemistry of the UNAM announced the fitting out of the first neutral bathroom inside its facilities. These sanitary spaces are designed to offer the community LGBTTTIQ+ an environment free of violence and discrimination.

In accordance with Paulina Trapagá, coordinator of the Gender Unit of CF, a neutral bathroom “is a public sanitary space with free access for people belonging to the diverse gender sex community or who live gender identity from diversity”.

The purpose of having this type of services, explained the authorities of the institution, is to promote the recognition and respect for gender identities so that the students “feel included, included and included”.

Likewise, they detailed what were the adjustments necessary to enable this space as a neutral bathroom: they placed doors on urinals to maintain privacy in urinalsin addition to the installation of 3 private WC cubicles.

The CF student community played a key role in creating this bathroom for people with diverse and non-normative gender identities, arguing for the need for peers to be recognized and accepted both by the authorities and by the rest of the students.

Prior to the installation and qualification of the neutral bathroom in the Faculty of Chemistry, the Gender Unit carried out a survey last May in order to identify dynamics of discrimination and violence in healthcare spaces from school.

According to data shared by Paulina Trapagain the study participated 297 students. The survey contemplated only two questions: if they agreed with the neutral bathroom and what were the reasons why they considered it important for the Faculty.

These are not the first bathrooms of this type at UNAM. In January 2018, the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Iztacalainaugurated the first mixed toilet inside its facilities, with the intention of promoting diversity in its community and offering the same services to all people.

This was the first mixed toilet to have been inaugurated at UNAM. That same year, in the month of March, the FES Aragón also opened a mixed toilet in its facilities.
