JAKARTA (EFE) – Residents of a village on the island of Celebes in central Indonesia found the body of a 45-year-old woman who disappeared inside a 5-meter-long python, Detik reported this Sunday.
Kalempan village head Suardi Rozi told Indonesian media that victim Farida was found inside the snake on Friday after a day-long search since it went missing.
The woman had gone to the market to sell her produce but did not return home that night and her husband and other villagers found her belongings near a plantation.
Then, they found the python with a huge lump on its body and decided to cut open the snake, wherein they found the corpse.
The reticulated python (‘Malaeophython reticulatus) is thought to be the world’s longest snake, reaching up to 8 metres long and 250 kilograms and usually suffocates its prey with its body before swallowing it whole.
The python feeds mainly on rodents, fish, and other reptiles, although larger specimens prey on monkeys, deer, wild boars, and even leopards.
Although it is not common, some pythons may attack and swallow an adult man or woman, as has happened on a few occasions in Indonesia.
A 27-year-old man was found dead inside a python in Sulawesi in 2017, while a 50-year-old woman was also found dead inside another snake on the island of Sumatra in 2022.
