This is the good side of being in a bad mood

The message that is constantly transferred from various spheres is that you have to be happy and content. That there is always someone who is worse off than you, so you have no reason to be angry or sad. In this sense, society has become little tolerant of those who are in a bad mood for whatever reason.

And this only serves to hide something that it’s totally normal: People get angry, upset, stressed and sad from time to time, and there is nothing wrong with that. So no effort should be made to try to pretend happiness that is not, when what is really there is a bad mood.

In fact, there is no scientific evidence to determine that being in a bad mood is a problem in itself. The error is in the management that is done of that internal sadness or anger and the attitude with which this state is faced. In this sense, you can take advantage of a bad mood so that, instead of being something negative, it is something positive.

Errors are detected earlier when in a bad mood

This has been indicated by a new study from the University of Arizona, which has been published in Frontiers in Communicationhas discovered that when someone is in a bad mood, they have the ability to more quickly identify literary or written inconsistencies, as their analytical capabilities increase. “We showed that when people are in a negative mood, they are more careful and analytical. They scrutinize what is actually said in a text, and are not limited to resorting to their default knowledge of the world,” said Vicky Lai, who led the research.

In order to demonstrate this, the researchers altered the mood of the volunteers who participated in the study by showing them fragments of the sad film. Apparently, the series had no effect. Respondents stayed the same after seeing it. However, those who did see the film did they were touched and had negative feelings.

During the evaluation, the subjects’ brain waves were analyzed by EEG to verify how they responded to inconsistencies in the text. Each subject participated in the experiment twice – once in each control group -, one week apart between each experiment.

Those who were in an unfavorable state of mind presented a reanalysis-associated brain activity, which demonstrated an attitude of vigilance in the face of errors. “These are the same stories, but in different moods, the brain sees them differently, the sad mood being the most analytical,” explained the researcher.

Due to this good side of bad mood, the researcher has recommended that when someone is angry or sad, you should do “more detail-oriented” tasks to take advantage of your mood. “We have shown that humor matters, and perhaps when we perform some tasks we should pay attention to our state of mind,” the expert acknowledged.
