Cinnamon is a spice that is usually present in our desserts, some savory dishes and can even be combined with coffee; in addition to its use in various medicines. Among its benefits, it is known to be the secret ingredient to good memory.

Neuroscientist Brandon Crawford, quoted in El Español, points out that just a pinch or teaspoon of cinnamon in our coffee every morning allows us to absorb the powerful antioxidants it contains, which can prevent the effects of oxidative stress in the brain.

In addition to preventing oxidative stress, this aromatic spice regulates blood sugar levels, which has also been linked to cognitive function and the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

According to Enséñame de Ciencia, cinnamon is a rich source of sodium benzoate (NaB), a metabolite that activates the CREB protein. This protein stimulates communication between neurons during external stimuli and promotes learning.

In addition to memory, it also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, helps reduce bad cholesterol, triglycerides and soothes indigestion.

As Crawford told El Español, there are other spices that, when combined with coffee, improve brain health due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, here are a few:

  • Ginger: Promotes the balance of neurotransmitters needed for concentration and mental alertness. According to El Español, it has anti-inflammatory effects that help reduce oxidative stress.
  • Turmeric: It is rich in curcumin, a natural dye that also reduces inflammation and oxidative damage in the brain. In addition, it increases levels of a hormone that promotes the growth of new neurons.
  • Black pepper: It can also be taken with coffee and contains curcumin.
  • Nutmeg: A neurologist quoted in Spanish media emphasizes that this spice has neuroprotective properties that improve memory and prevent degeneration of neural pathways.
