“I knew right away something was wrong.”
Former US President Donald Trump, who was slightly injured in an attack at a campaign rally this Saturday, described in a message on social media how he heard a “whoosh” when the bullet passed close to his head.
Trump was giving a speech at a crowded election rally when a shooter opened fire his right ear hurtTherefore he had to be taken out and treated.
The former president himself has testified on the Truth social network about what happened during the rally in the city of Butler, Pennsylvania.
In a second message, Trump urged Americans to “stay united” and “show your true character as Americans by staying strong and determined and not allowing evil to win.”
The alleged shooter was killed by officers. One person present at the event also died and two others were seriously injured.
“I would like to offer My condolences to the family About the man who was killed at the rally, and about the other man who was seriously injured,” the former president expressed on Truth Network, a platform he himself promoted.
Authorities eventually confirmed the victims of the attack were three adult males, one of whom died.
He thanked “the United States Secret Service and all security forces for their quick response.”
Trump said it was “unbelievable that an act like this could occur in our country.”
He also said that “at present nothing is known about the attacker, who is dead.”
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later identified a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks as the alleged shooter.
The Republican candidate in the Nov. 5 election also offered his own first-person account of the incident.
“They shot me with a bullet I got a hole in my upper ear “Okay,” he said.
He added, “When I heard the whistling sound, the gunfire, I immediately knew something was wrong and immediately felt the bullets tearing my skin.”
He concluded, “There was a lot of blood and then I realized what was going on.”
In his second post of the night, already from his residence in New Jersey, Trump thanked the messages of support and assured that “only God managed to prevent the unthinkable.”
He added, “We will not be afraid, but we will remain firm in our faith and stand firm in the face of evil.”
As gunfire was heard, the former president could be seen placing his hand on his right ear and leaning behind a lectern on the stage.
He was immediately protected by Secret Service agents, who covered him and held him on the ground until, through the microphone of the lectern, which was still open, one of the agents could be heard shouting: “The shooter is down!”
At that point, agents picked up Trump, who appeared shocked and had blood on his face, but who raised his fist to his supporters, who were cheered by the gesture.
The public then began chanting “USA!”, which is the abbreviation for United States of America in English, while the former president shouted: “fight fight!”,
Agents took Trump off the stage and into an armored vehicle, where he was taken to a nearby medical center.
The former president is “fine,” according to sources within his campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC).
Trump was discharged and returned by plane to his residence in New Jersey.
The former president is scheduled to attend next week’s Republican convention, which will be held in Milwaukee and begin Monday. Trump is scheduled to speak on Thursday, when he will become the party’s official nominee.
“I truly love our country, and I love all of you, and I look forward to speaking to our great Nation from Wisconsin this week,” Trump said in his second message of the night.
The attacker opened fire from the rooftop of a building about 200 metres from the rally, but outside the security perimeter.
However, the fact that someone could approach the former president at such a short distance with a semi-automatic rifle is The focus is on how security was arranged there.
Particular attention is focused on the Secret Service, which is in charge of protecting presidents and former presidents.
The Oversight Committee – the main investigative body of the United States House of Representatives – has called US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing scheduled for July 22.
The committee “demands answers about the attempted assassination of US President Trump,” it said in a statement on social media.
