“I knew right away something was wrong.”

Former US President Donald Trump, who was slightly injured in an attack at a campaign rally this Saturday, described in a message on social media how he heard a “whoosh” when the bullet passed close to his head.

Authorities eventually confirmed the victims of the attack were three adult males, one of whom died.

He thanked “the United States Secret Service and all security forces for their quick response.”

Trump said it was “unbelievable that an act like this could occur in our country.”

He also said that “at present nothing is known about the attacker, who is dead.”

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later identified a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks as the alleged shooter.

The Republican candidate in the Nov. 5 election also offered his own first-person account of the incident.

“They shot me with a bullet I got a hole in my upper ear “Okay,” he said.

He added, “When I heard the whistling sound, the gunfire, I immediately knew something was wrong and immediately felt the bullets tearing my skin.”

He concluded, “There was a lot of blood and then I realized what was going on.”

In his second post of the night, already from his residence in New Jersey, Trump thanked the messages of support and assured that “only God managed to prevent the unthinkable.”

He added, “We will not be afraid, but we will remain firm in our faith and stand firm in the face of evil.”

The former president is scheduled to attend next week’s Republican convention, which will be held in Milwaukee and begin Monday. Trump is scheduled to speak on Thursday, when he will become the party’s official nominee.

The attacker opened fire from the rooftop of a building about 200 metres from the rally, but outside the security perimeter.
