Two athletes died during the triathlon competition that took place this Thursday, October 17, in Torremolinos. The dead are a man from the UK and another from Mexico; one of them was 57 and the other was 79 years old.
One man died while performing a running leg and another felt unwell during a swimming test, SUR has learned.
Both athletes did not compete in junior or under-23 disciplines, elite (absolute category) or paratriathlon, but in age groups (GGEE). This modality takes up a large part of the participation in any triathlon competition, given that these are ordinary people, with a good sports background and even former athletes who have decided to compete again. The age groups are divided into four year groups and in the case of Torremolinos it reaches 90–94 years in the male category and 85–89 years in the female category. This Wednesday afternoon there was a test for the sprint age group – the shortest distance.
