ULPGC is co-organizing an international congress dedicated to optimizing data transmission from space | ULPGK

The University Institute of Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) made one of the main presentations

ULPGC, through the University Institute of Applied Microelectronics, is co-organizing the International Congress on On-Board Payload Data Compression (OBPDC) with European Space Agency

And French National Center for Space Researchwhich is celebrated from 2 to 4 October at the Canary Islands Conference Center (Auditorio Alfredo Kraus) and at the university headquarters.

During the three days of this event, experts, researchers and aerospace agencies will present the latest developments in the field of data transmission from space to Earth, which is the central theme of the Congress. Currently, the volume of data generated by various stations and satellites in orbit is enormous, on the order of hundreds of terabytes per day, which requires finding new ways to reduce this information to optimize its transmission to Earth.

With the ability to collect data from these devices continually growing without capacity increasing at the same rate, the reduction and processing of information on board a satellite is critical to the success of any mission. For this reason, this Congress brings together experts who will lay on the table the keys to making this transmission more efficient, among which the standardization of solutions to achieve universal coverage, the inclusion of higher-power avionics and the introduction of intelligence stand out. . Artificial.

The IUMA Design Integrated Systems (DSI) research group will play an important role in this Congress as it is currently the leader in Europe in providing hardware solutions for the CCSDS 121 data compression, CCSDS 123 hyperspectral data compression standards. images, as well as in hardware solutions for video compression. Various European Space Agency projects use these circuits on various ESA space missions.

Similarly, the OBPDC Congress will hold three special sessions with three experts from different fields. Secretary General for Innovation of the Spanish Government, Teresa, Risk Wardenwill give an overview of Spain’s aerospace sector and talk about plans for the future following the recent creation of the Spanish Space Agency. Doctor Jason E. Eshragianprofessor at the University of Santa Cruz (California, USA) will talk about neuromorphic computing and its great future in space applications, since (unlike other artificial intelligence applications) it requires very little energy.

Finally, at Friday’s meeting in the Stone Hall of the Rector’s Office, Dr. José López Feliciano, Professor Department of Electronic and Automation and a researcher working at IUMA will give a presentation on the important potential of the island of Gran Canaria to develop a strong and promising aerospace sector.

During the Congress, the closing of which is carried out by the Vice-Rector for Scientific Work and Transfer of ULGK. Sebastian LopezThe best presentation will also receive the Penshu Ye Award (in memory of a NASA engineer).

This meeting is also supported by the European Space Agency and the French National Center for Space Research, and is also co-funded Society for the Promotion of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
