Ultra-processed foods are dangerous to life | Rioja

I know they’ll call me annoying, but I’m a journalist and news is king. A new investigation has once again revealed what we have repeatedly warned about in this area: ultra-processed foods kill. They’re rich, they turn out addictive, blah, blah, blah…? Yes, sure! But with such delicious dishes and top quality products available in this corner of the planet, who needs a supposedly edible industrial product? As I already said, little by little this crap, like the most terrible poisons, kills.

The latest work on this type of very useful product (poisonous, I insist) bears the American seal and involves the observation of more than 100,000 people for at least thirty years. Interestingly, all the volunteers were medical professionals. The study included almost 75,000 nurses and 39,500 men, all of whom were completely healthy. They were observed between 1984 and 2018. Every two years, volunteers provided data about their health to those responsible for the work. Each four completed a detailed questionnaire about the overall quality of their diet. The analysis of all this data makes up the now famous study, which was published by none other than the British Medical Journal, perhaps the most prestigious scientific journal in the world.

Run away from crab sticks

This is not a significantly higher risk of death compared to the rest of the population, but it is important enough to consider eliminating certain foods from our diet. The most problematic are meat, poultry and seafood products, especially crab sticks. Other items that should be included on the “no-no” list include sugary drinks, dairy-based desserts, and highly processed breakfast foods such as cereals and snacks.

All of them often contain dyes, emulsifiers, flavors and other additives, as well as high calorie content caused by excessive addition of salt and saturated fat. In addition, as the researchers remind, they lack fiber and vitamins.

There is growing evidence linking them not only to an increased chance of early death, but also of disease. Regular consumers of ultra-processed foods are more likely to suffer from obesity and all related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and even some types of cancer such as colon cancer.

The Origins of the Obesity Epidemic

Another investigation conducted around the same time involving an Australian seal found that ultra-processed foods were a major cause of the obesity epidemic plaguing the West, despite lack of exercise.

Well, the French omelette is better than the seemingly best processed meat. With free-range, outdoor-raised eggs, of course. Happy week. Eat well.
