After a relatively quiet start, the action at the 24 Hours of Spa reached its climax after three hours of racing. The #98 Rowe-BMW (Eng/Wittmann/Yelloly) and the #63 Iron Lynx Lamborghini (Bortolotti/Cairoli/Caldarelli), two option cars, were eliminated from the battle for the win.

However, Grasser Lamborghini #163 (Pepper/Perera/Mapelli), which started from pole position, was lucky. The SSR Porsche was lucky and was able to hold on to its lap lead, while the HRT-AMG, which is competing in the Gold Cup, lost its lead on the lap. It is currently unclear how exactly the Rowe-BMW became involved in the incident; it may have been hit by debris.

In any case, the BMW M4 GT3 and Iron Lynx Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2 had to go into the pits for repairs. #63 was already six laps down. With both cars in the gravel, another FCY occurred, and then another accident.
