The Department of Health has updated the NHS Stroke Strategy, highlighting that up to 90% of cases can be prevented thanks to a healthy lifestyle and regular medical examinations. This update incorporates the latest scientific advances and is in line with the European Stroke Action Plan 2018–2030. It reflects a desire to reduce the impact of the disease, which affects 120,000 people in Spain each year and causes 25,000 deaths.
On the occasion of World Stroke Day, the health organization highlights the importance of preventing the disease, which continues to be the leading cause of disability in Europe and a leading cause of death. Although the incidence of stroke increases with age, there is an alarming 25% increase among people aged 20 to 64
. These findings support the relevance of implementing effective strategies from an early age.The updated Stroke Strategy focuses on six key areas, from prevention to rehabilitation. health promotion and primary prevention lead these efforts to reduce the impact of risk factors such as smoking, hypertension and sedentary lifestyle, which are responsible for the majority of preventable strokes.
Other priority areas include secondary prevention, which aims to prevent relapses in those who have already suffered a stroke, and the acute phase, which optimizes the speed of diagnosis and initial treatment. Healthcare also promotes treatment in stroke units, which is essential to improve survival and reduce consequences for patients.
In addition, neurorehabilitation and ongoing support in life after stroke are fundamental aspects of the strategy. These processes aim to ensure that patients achieve optimal functional recovery and greater autonomy. Finally, medical research and teaching aims to promote the development of new treatments and the training of specialists.
The revised strategy is the result cooperation between scientific societies, patient associations and representatives of autonomous communitiescollaborative efforts to ensure consistent implementation across social media. This comprehensive approach is also supported by organizations such as the Carlos III Institute of Health and the National Referral Center for the Treatment of Brain Injuries (Ceadac). Thus, it aims to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the impact of stroke in Spanish society.
The Ministry of Health has proposed by 2030 treat 90% of patients in specialized departments and reduce the incidence of strokes by 10% throughout Europe. “Stroke can be prevented and cured” say the strategy coordinators, emphasizing that this update is a critical step towards comprehensive, evidence-based care throughout the territory.
This strategy, combining prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, aims not only to reduce the impact of this disease on the Spanish population, but also to meet European goals, positioning Spain as a benchmark for comprehensive and coordinated stroke care.
