Gustavo Petro calls on OAS to “bet on world peace”
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro reacted to the Iranian attack against Israel on his X account and, in the process, attacked the Organization of American States. “Genocide precedes all barbarism,” the president said on social networks. He cited statements by OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro, questioning whether the organization had “unequivocally” condemned Iran’s attacks on Israel rather than “betting on world peace.” And this was not his first statement in this regard.
A few minutes earlier, citing fake news about the alleged threat to the United States from Vladimir Putin, he had shared his perception about the reasons for the increase in violence. “It was predictable; “We are now right in the prelude to World War III when humanity must rebuild its economy toward the rapid goal of decarbonization.” That publication was removed in less than an hour.
Diplomatic relations between Colombia and Israel reached their peak in November, when Petro described the Israeli military attack on the Gaza Strip as “genocide”. Although the situation seemed to calm down, on 26 March the Colombian President returned to the issue and welcomed the fact that the UN Security Council ordered a ceasefire in Gaza. He also said, on that occasion, in X, “If Israel breaks this ceasefire I invite the countries of the world to break diplomatic relations with that country.”
