The United States fears its own veto in the United Nations on the new ceasefire request

The UN Security Council will vote on Tuesday on a resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza, which the United States will veto, according to diplomatic sources.

More than two weeks ago, Algeria submitted a preliminary draft resolution to consider demanding an end to the violence. However, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield immediately said the text could jeopardize “sensitive talks” aimed at bringing about a ceasefire in the war.

Algeria requested this Saturday that the Council vote on Tuesday. To be adopted, a UN Security Council resolution requires at least nine votes in favor and no veto, which can be raised by the United States, Great Britain, France, China, or Russia. “The United States does not support action on this draft resolution. If it is put to a vote as written, it will not be adopted,” Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement published Saturday.

Washington traditionally protects its ally Israel from UN action and has already vetoed council action twice since October 7. He has also absented himself on two occasions, allowing the adoption of resolutions calling for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza and an immediate and long-term humanitarian pause in the fighting.

Negotiations are underway between the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar for a ceasefire in exchange for the release of the hostages. The US representative to the organization said, “It is important to provide the best possible chance for success as well as a permanent resolution of hostilities rather than promoting measures that could jeopardize this process.”

The council vote comes as Israel also plans to attack Rafah in southern Gaza, where more than one million Palestinians have sought refuge, raising international concerns that such a move would dramatically worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Will get spoiled.

“The situation in Gaza is a terrible sign of stagnation in global relations,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lamented at the Munich Security Conference. This was a reference to the lack of unity in the Security Council, he later clarified: “And how that lack of unity has hindered our ability to improve situations around the world.” (Reuters)
