During a medical examination, your doctor will usually tell you that you have slightly low levels of the hormone in your blood. Vitamin D and in the end I prescribed some pills with her.
Well, as in the case with blood cholesterol levelExperts disagree on what Vitamin D level They must be correct.
Various studies have linked low vitamin D levels to higher mortality for various reasons, but there is something to pay attention to.
“The only one convincing and conclusive evidence What we know about the role of vitamin D in the human body is in regulating minerals and their impact on the health of our bones,” he explains. Diana Diaz RizzoloProfessor of Medical Sciences at the Open University of Catalonia (UPC).
However, he stresses that “there is a clear, obvious and very strong association between vitamin D levels and mortality from any cause.” A scientific puzzle with a disturbing fact: a large part of the population is deficient in vitamin D, despite the ease of obtaining a nutrient that can protect us from many diseases.
In addition, the Endocrine Society, a scientific medical organization, has just published an updated version of its guidelines that removes the traditional cutoff of 75 nmol/L (30 ng/mL) below which a person is considered to have low vitamin D levels and recommends not screening the general population, but only various risk groups such as children and adolescents (to prevent rickets, a bone disease), people over 74, pregnant women, or people with diabetes.
Vitamin D deficiency is not compensated for in all patients, as supplements are not usually prescribed to the general population, partly because their effectiveness has not been demonstrated in all patients, but only in certain groups, which are now considered by the Endocrine Society to help focus the problem better. “We emphasize that its deficiency cannot be attributed to the cause of any health problem,” the UPC expert reminds, so “measuring it in an unspecified population may represent a marker of deficiency to which we cannot attribute any real health problem.”
“We are not sure of its usefulness, but given the existing doubts that usually always bother us in science and medicine, its use is not counterproductive and may be beneficial if in the coming years we understand more about the role of this vitamin in the human body,” says the doctor.
