Which countries do you vote in in the European elections?

After two recent regional elections in the Basque Country and Catalonia, and less than a year since the last general elections on 23 July, the time is approaching to choose the representatives who will defend Spain’s interests in the European Parliament. On which day does each country vote?

Although votes will be counted on a single ballot, EU countries have scheduled their elections on different days. For example, voters in the Netherlands will go to the polls first thing next Thursday, June 6, while most member countries will go to the polls on Sunday, June 9. The dates for each vote are detailed below:

6 June: Netherlands.

7 June: Ireland and Czech Republic.

8 June: Slovakia, Latvia, Malta, overseas territories of France and Italy.

9 June: The rest of the countries, including Spain and Italy, will have two days to vote. Also voting on this day: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, France, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden.

Which are the most abstaining countries in the European Union?

Among the 27 member countries, there are several that are known for their low participation. In particular, three countries stand out:

  • Czech Republic: Since joining the EU in 2004, the Czech Republic has held four European elections, but has never reached a 30% voter turnout. Low turnout in European elections has been a persistent problem in the country.
  • Croatia: As the newest member of the European Union, Croatia has participated in European elections on three occasions since 2013. Despite having a significant voting-eligible population, voter turnout in Croatia has been quite low compared to other member states.
  • Slovenia: As a member since 2004, Slovenia has, on its historical average, managed to convince around 28% of its voters to participate in European elections. Although there has been an improvement in terms of participation compared to other countries, this is still a low figure.
