Why do some people not get sick from Covid-19? Science provides the first answers

Why are there still people who have never been infected with Covid-19? Scientists have the answer. Wellcome Sanger Institute, University College London (UCL), Imperial College London and the Dutch Cancer Institute (Netherlands), together with some of their collaborators, studied immune responses against coronavirus infections. The sample consisted of healthy adults.as part of the first global study into the human impact of the disease.

Scientists were able to verify that not all exposed participants developed covid-19 infection, data that allowed them to discover unique immune responses associated with resistance to persistent viral infections and diseases. Findings published in Natureprovide the most comprehensive chronology to date of how the body responds to infectious diseases.

Over the past four years, coronavirus has affected millions of people around the world. COVID-19 It is potentially contagious, but we all have cases among people who, despite exposure to the disease, have never contracted it. In this new study researchers set out to capture immune responses straight from the exhibition to try to solve this mystery.

Scientists have chosen 36 healthy adult volunteers who did not have Covid-19. to introduce the virus through the nose. The researchers conducted detailed monitoring of the blood and nasal mucosa, tracking any infections as well as immune cell activity up to that time. All patients the team discovered previously unreported answers related to upon immediate detection of the virus.

Participants responded by activating specialized mucosal immune cells in the blood, as well as reducing the number of inflammatory white blood cells that normally engulf and destroy pathogens. It means that Individuals who cleared the virus immediately did not experience a generalized immune response.but they developed subtle and never before seen innate reactions.

Researchers suggest that high levels of HLA-DQA2 gene activity before infection may also help people prevent persistent infection. Six people who developed persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection They had a fast immune response in the blood, but a slower one in the nose, allowing the virus to take up residence in the nasal passages.

The researchers also identified common patterns among activated T cell receptors, which recognize and bind to cells infected with the virus. This provides insight into immune cell interactions and potential develop targeted therapy using T cells, not only against Covid-19, but also against many other diseases.

Covid-19 is growing at the gates of summer

Infections caused by COVID-19 has increased over the past two weeks with “more symptomatic” symptoms than in previous months and a greater influx of patients in First aidalthough the impact of the endemic wave on hospitals, which was moderate, continues to soften and now accounts for almost a quarter of hospital admissions due to respiratory infection.

Reports National Epidemiological Center of the Carlos III Institute of Health show that the estimated average incidence in Spain has risen from 107 to 128 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks and that hospitalization rates are associated with infection COVID-19 decreases from 4.2 cases due to the above proportion to 3.5. A week ago, those hospitalized with Covid-19-related infections accounted for a third of the total number of hospital admissions for acute respiratory illnesses at this time of year, with the majority of them being vulnerable patients.
