Why doesn’t Google Maps always show the shortest route?

Have you ever used Google Maps and you realized that this is not the shortest path? Although this may seem like an application glitch, There is a logical explanation for this.

SELECTING THE FASTEST ROUTE ON GOOGLE MAPS

Most drivers, especially young ones, prefer to use Google Maps for their trips. However, Many people choose alternative apps like Waze.. Google Maps users often complain that the app doesn’t always take the shortest route when entering a destination.

The main reason is that Google Maps prioritizes the fastest route available, not necessarily the shortest by distance. This is because the app’s algorithms take into account multiple factors in real time. such as traffic, recent accidents and road works

. If the shortest route is congested or problematic, the app will redirect you to an alternative route that, although longer, will get you to your destination in less time.

Even early in the morning when there is no traffic, Google Maps may suggest a detour. This is due to several factors:

  1. Algorithmic calculations: Google Maps algorithms make accurate calculations and take into account that on average, the suggested route will take you less time to travel, even if it is longer.
  2. Driving Habits Analysis: Google Maps also analyzes your driving habits. If you frequently take certain streets or shortcuts, the app can interpret them as preferred routes and suggest them in your direction.

HOW TO SET GOOGLE MAPS ROUTES

If you are sure that there are no traffic jams or problems on the route you have chosen, you can change the recommended route Google Maps. As you enter your destination, click one of the options that appear gray instead of blue. This will allow you to compare the times of each option and show Google Maps your preferences.

For those who prefer not to personalize their routes, Google offers privacy management options:

  • Activity controls: You can view and edit your location history, web and app activity in your Google account.
  • Disable personalization: If you feel necessary, you can disable these features to avoid personalization of results. Please note that this will also mean losing access to the timeline and other user features.
