Winamp wants to be immortal, and to achieve this goal its owners have made a single decision: to publish its source code.

Last April, Winamp turned 27 years old. This is a pretty awesome logo for Media player it has kept its essence virtually intact even in a time when streaming music reigns supreme. We now have reason to believe that this program will live on for a long time.

Llama Group, the current owner of Winamp, has announced that it will open source the application. This move, which will take place on September 24, will allow developers from all over the world to contribute their experiences and ideas to ensure that the legendary player is constantly updated and developed.

Winamp is preparing to become “immortal”

We are talking about the source code of the version of Windows, the one that appeared in 1997, author: Nullsoft and two years later it caught the attention of AOL, which eventually bought it for $80 million. Since then, times have changed a lot and the music sector has changed many times.

Winamp has survived the era of iTunes, the Apple platform that allowed us to buy our favorite songs, and the world of streaming with offerings like Spotify and Apple Music. The program, as we say, has retained its essence, being a player of various formats, which allows, among other things, to extract music from CDs.

Llama Group has not forgotten about the application, which has received support for Windows 11 and can be downloaded for free. However, it seems to be required community support to preserve it over time. It should be noted that Winamp will still be a proprietary application, and that Llama Group will decide what new features appear in the final version.

Llama Group also has other initiatives such as a platform for music creators that simplifies the process of distributing, playing and licensing songs. They will also be launching a Winamp app for mobile phones soon.
