Korean publisher Nexon has a competitor to Warframe or Destiny, and its monetization is as difficult as many feared

This week, Korean giant Nexon launched its new mmo marauder shooter Free: The First Descendant, a game clearly meant to compete with the likes of Warframe or (to a lesser extent) Destiny. As usual in Asian MMOmonetization is a big part of the experience, and in this particular case, Valve’s community reviews reflect the controversy on the issue: is TFD a game that insults your wallet?

It is difficult to answer this question. Through your store in GameThe First Descendant offers several sets that are priced close to or higher than some AA releases, and in almost all cases they include items that actively contribute money to your character development. Blacklist Games pay to winHowever, this can be considered somewhat irrelevant, since in all cases we are talking about shortcuts or boosters for a strictly co-op title; as well as conveniences – for example, you can pay to have more inventory slots and clean it less often – or modifiers that become obsolete within a few hours of starting the game.

How much do the First Descendant characters cost?

acquiring new Descendants (playable characters) are undoubtedly the most aggressive monetization avenue in First Descendant, but to better understand the extent to which this is the case, we first need to look at Caliber meaningwhich is the game’s premium currency. Here are the purchase options available at the time of writing:

  • 250 calibers – 4.99 euros.
  • 520 calibers (500+20 extra) – 9.99 euros
  • 1060 calibers (1000+60 extra) – 19.99 euros
  • 2750 calibers (2500+250 additional) – 49.99 euros
  • 3920 calibers (3500+420 additional) – 69.99 euros
  • 5750 calibers (5000+750 extra) – 99.99 euros

If you do the math, one Euro is equivalent to about 20 Calibers. You can get 13 of the 14 characters that make up the “standard” Descendant roster for between 300 and 900 Calibers, excluding just your starting hero; or through packs of 450, 700, and 950 Calibers, depending on the base price of the character, if you want to add some bonuses as well.

You will notice that minimum payout This premium currency is not enough to buy any additional fighters, so you will have to spend at least almost ten euros to expand your repertoire; in which case you will have just enough left to buy a hairstyle, an accessory or leather basic (repaint). This practice is quite common in the market. free gameand in recent years we’ve also seen this in the West in games like Overwatch 2.

You might find something more shocking Final price of the characterwhich are not officially translated, but we can interpret them as “final”: they are more powerful versions, at least on paper, of some existing Scions. An idea that Warframe players are already familiar with, and which here can only be acquired through packs that include special transmogs, slots and more; priced between 3000 and 5000 Calibers depending on how many add-ons you want to add to your cart.

If you compare these prices with the list above, you will find that one character can cost you from 55 to 95 euros; although at least in these cases you would also take some consumables with you and Shells. Can you get them for free? Yes, it is: as I said, all these payments are just shortcuts. Of course, it is not easy to do, and First Descendant expects you to spend a decent amount of time collecting materials on more complex versions of certain actions; and also expect investigation stages that in some cases last up to 36 hours.
