WWDC 2024: License to Excite

“Remember when iOS 18 was introduced? That 2024 year was spectacular. It changed the history of iOS forever, just like iOS 7 did in 2013. I hope one day I can write a similar introduction. Or send a message to an Apple enthusiast friend who felt the same emotions as me when We are just a few hours away from Apple’s historic event.. Another. After decades of development, last year’s release of Vision Pro was just the first step.

Honestly, my journalistic soul makes me aware every day of all the good things that are yet to come, but also the disappointments that may arise. And in some ways, the deeper Alvaro might need to lower his expectations to avoid disappointment later. But you know what? That I don’t want this. I want to get excited. And I don’t want to hide it.

Prelude to something (very) big

It’s been years since I’ve felt this much excitement in the weeks leading up to the Apple Developers Conference. And don’t get me wrong, WWDC is my favorite Apple event. Even higher than the new iPhones. After all, it is at these events that such a fundamental part as the software is presented and, as a cherry on the cake, on many devices without the need to go through the checkout.

However, I think that from the most enthusiastic to the least close to the brand, we agree on something: iOS hasn’t been impressive for years. And be careful, I don’t want bad interpretations here either. This is not necessarily something negative, but it can even have a positive reading, which, in my opinion, it does.

iOS is an extremely mature system, and while there may be some shortcomings, it’s nothing major. Personalization, greater openness to third parties and much more. These are classic big “problems” of the iPhone system, and even they are solved in the latest versions. It’s not ideal, of course not.

For years I combined Android and iOS to the point where I could live just fine with either. However, I always return to iOS for purely personal reasons. And like me, there are many other users who choose between one or the other because of the minimal aspects that ultimately help them in their daily life.

Not being left behind is an exciting challenge

Unlike my colleague Pedro Aznar, director of Applesfera, I do not have as much experience in operation and use. I have 12 years as a brand user under my belt and seven of them as a tech media professional. A lot or a little, depending on who is reading it and how you want to interpret them. In my opinion, this is enough to witness the evolution and stagnation of a system that, in the opinion of many, is not moving forward. And that may have been true two years ago, but not now.

The rise of generative artificial intelligenceand I’ll clarify the generative one, because AI has existed for a long time and Apple also uses it, it forced everyone big tech press the gas pedal. And OpenAI, Microsoft and even Google already have a good list of achievements at the moment, and Apple, unlike them, was afraid to even utter the term “artificial intelligence”. Until now.

Leaks suggest several AI developments with iOS 18 and the rest of the systems as it will something transversal for all operating systems. For some of these features, OpenAI is being talked about as a vendor that Apple has entered into an agreement with, according to sources close to both companies. And all this without taking Google out of the equation.

There is no place for a bad omen in this case.

Like I said, it makes sense that part of me is a little cautious when it comes to measuring expectations, and that part of me is telling me, “Hey, calm down, maybe it won’t matter so much later.” “Of course, this can happen and lead to disappointment, although I decided to enjoy it.

After nearly a decade of working in technology communications and feeling like I’ve seen it all, few things give me high expectations. On the other hand, artificial intelligence excites me again. Therefore, clipping your wings in a dream is now absurd.

There are hours left before the start of this event, which in its prelude promises to become historic. Nerves to the limit. And frankly, I don’t know whether what happens after June 10 will change our lives or not. Perhaps these are too lofty dreams. Although If anyone has shown how to break the market, it’s Apple.. Now they will have to do it again.
