Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he is confident the war with Russia will “soon end” after Donald Trump is sworn in as US president.
Zelensky said he had a “constructive conversation” with Trump during a telephone conversation following the Republican victory in the US presidential elections on November 5.
He did not say whether Trump had made any demands regarding possible negotiations with Russia, but said he had not heard anything from him that would contradict Ukraine’s position.
Trump has consistently said that his priority is to end the war and stop the waste of US resources in the form of military aid to Ukraine.
Earlier this year, the US House of Representatives approved a $61 billion package of military aid to Ukraine so Kiev can counter Russian aggression.
According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German research organization, the United States has been the largest arms supplier to Ukraine: between February 2022 and the end of June 2024, it delivered or pledged $55.5 billion worth of arms and equipment.
“It is certain that Now the war will end soon due to the policies of the team leading the White HouseThis is his vision, his promise to his citizens,” Zelensky said in an interview with a Ukrainian media outlet. suspilne,
He said Ukraine should “make every effort to end this war next year and to end it through diplomatic means.”
The situation on the battlefield is difficult, Zelensky said, with the Russian army advancing.
Trump and Zelensky have long had a tumultuous relationship.
Trump was impeached in 2019 on charges that he pressured Zelensky to dig up damaging information about US President Joe Biden’s family.
Despite differences over the years, Trump has insisted that he has a very good relationship with Zelensky.
When the two met in New York in September, Trump said he “learned a lot” from the meeting and said he would resolve the war “very quickly.”
During the US election campaign, the former president-elect repeatedly promised to end the war “in one day”, but he has not yet revealed how he plans to do so.
His Democratic opponents have accused him of devoting himself to Russian President Vladimir Putin and say his approach to war is tantamount to a Ukrainian capitulation that would put all of Europe at risk.
Earlier this week, Russia denied reports that Putin and Trump had a call days after his election victory, saying the president-elect warned against further escalating the conflict.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who spoke to Trump after the US election, told German media that the incoming US leader has a “more nuanced” position on the war than commonly believed.
Zelensky criticized the German leader for his phone conversation with Putin on Friday – their first in nearly two years.
Although Scholz’s office said he reiterated his call to end the war, Zelensky said it undermines the Russian leader’s isolation strategy.
