Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was sentenced for confiscation of property to two years in prison, which she will not serve.

The 25th Criminal Court of Barcelona sentenced former tennis player Arantxa Sánchez Vicario to two years in prison (she will not serve time on the condition that she does not repeat the offenses) and her ex-husband Josep Santacana to three years and three months in prison for the crime. about asset seizure to hide his assets to avoid paying the Bank of Luxembourg a debt of 7.5 million euros.

The verdict, seen by Europa Press this Wednesday, also sentences three other defendants to one year and three months in prison for the same crime and orders the former tennis player and her ex-husband to pay joint compensation to the Bank in the amount of 6,620,127.60 euros. Luxembourg.

The document also provides for the suspension of the sentence imposed on Sanchez Vicario and another convict for a period of two years, provided that they no longer commit crimes.

Taking into account the evidence obtained during the trial, the judge confirmed that Sanchez Vicario “possessed and always had sufficient assets to cover the debt and that through the deeds of sale and deduction from the amount of the arrest, he prevented the collection of the debt.” duty”.

It is “probable” that Sanchez Vicario did not succeed.

He also remembers that the former tennis player admitted her participation in the events, at the same time accusing Santakana of managing her assets and stating that “she did not have any knowledge related to asset management and that she always entrusted it to third parties, first to her parents, and after her marriage, or rather since she took control of the assets in November 2009, to her husband.”

The magistrate considers it proven that Santacana managed the assets of Sánchez Vicario, “and that he designed and carried out depatrimonization operations that made it impossible to pay the debt.”

According to the judge, it is “entirely plausible” that Sánchez Vicario had no knowledge or interest in asset management, so he outsourced the management of his assets to third parties, while Santacana had knowledge from working in the real estate sector. .

Santacana will appeal

Satakana’s lawyer, Juan Segarra, warned that once the verdict is known, he will appeal the verdict, which he believes “does not reflect what was seen in court.”

In statements to reporters after the verdict in the Ciutat de la Justicia, he called the resolution a “mere copy of the prosecution documents” and disgraced the judge for lending credibility to Sánchez Vicario’s account.

For his part, the lawyer of the former tennis player, Borja Vives, said that they are satisfied because their agreement with the charges was “honored” and the prison sentence was suspended as of this Wednesday.

“Because it could not be otherwise, the trial was an accurate reflection of the reality that occurred, and the verdict stated that Mr. Santacana designed, organized and carried out these acts of depatrimonization,” Vives added after being notified of the ruling.
