British Parliament approves sending migrants to Rwanda
London (EFE).- The British Parliament last night approved controversial legislation that will allow migrants who enter the United Kingdom irregularly to be deported to Rwanda, after a tug-of-war between the two houses, the Commons and Parliament. Lords.
One of the promises of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the piece of legislation was approved after an intense night in which both houses exchanged the legislation up to five times in what has been called ‘parliamentary pin pon’.
The House of Lords (Upper) approved the legislation after deciding not to add further amendments. The Commons had rejected all that the peers had sent them.
The legislation has now been sent to King Charles III of the United Kingdom to be signed for royal assent.
Deportations could begin in a few weeks
After receiving the green light from Parliament, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assured this Tuesday that “nothing will hinder” his objective of deporting migrants crossing the English Channel illegally to Rwanda.
In a statement to the media, Sunak said the legislation is “historic” and represents “a fundamental shift in the global equation on migration”.
“We introduced the Rwanda Bill to prevent vulnerable migrants from making the dangerous crossing and break the business model of criminal gangs that exploit them,” he said.

For his part, in a video posted on social media, Interior Minister James Cleverley stressed that the piece of legislation “will stop people abusing the law by using false claims about human rights to prevent expulsions, And it makes clear that the Parliament of the United Kingdom is sovereign.”
The law promoted by the executive was intended to declare Rwanda a safe country after the British Supreme Court – the highest judicial instance – deemed the initial plan illegal.
In November, the Supreme Court concluded that the African nation is not safe because migrants could be returned to their countries of origin from which they fled.
