The highest level this financial year was recorded in July last year at 1,795.5 million, which in turn is the highest since the generation of 1,829.7 million kWh in August 2022.

Puerto Rico’s electricity production and consumption recorded their lowest levels in November of the current fiscal year 2023-2024, a five-month period (July to November) during which both variables remained, however, above last year’s comparable levels.

Generation for November, according to Luma Energy, amounted to 1,571.6 million kWh, which is lower than 1,760.6 million in October, but higher than 1,488.3 million in November 2022.

The highest level this financial year was recorded in July last year at 1,795.5 million, which in turn is the highest since the generation of 1,829.7 million kWh in August 2022.

The amount accumulated in the first five months of the current 2023-2024 financial year is 8680.6 million, which is 10.9% more than the amount accumulated during the same period last year.

The numbers for these 11 months of the 2023 calendar year are also higher than the 2022 figures. Cumulative generation amounted to 18,325.3 million kWh, which is 4.2% more than the 16,877.0 million generated in the same months of calendar year 2022.

Consumption also decreased

Electricity consumption in Puerto Rico was 1,389.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) in November, the lowest this fiscal year, although higher than the 1,333.0 million in the same month last year.

In July this consumption was 1.584 million; 1580.9 million in August; 1571.3 million in September; and 1616.8 million kWh in October.

Residential consumers consumed 569.0 million kWh, up 1.5% from 560.5 million in the same month in 2022. However, this figure is lower than the consumption of the previous months of the current financial year. The highest figure for the period was 716.7 million kWh in July.

The commercial sector showed a similar pattern with its consumption declining in November compared to previous months of the financial period but increasing compared to November last year.

Reported consumption for November was 656.4 million kWh, down from 735.9 million kWh in October but higher than 592.7 million kWh in November 2022.

Industrial consumption, for its part, registered a decline in both comparisons. This reached 133.5 million kWh, down from 149.4 million kWh in October and a 10.8% decline from 149.6 million kWh in November last year.

During these five months of the current fiscal year 2023-24 (July to November), total consumption is 15.5% higher than the same period in the previous one. This figure is estimated at 7,742.6 million, up from FY 2022’s figure of 6,706.3 million kWh.

During these 11 months corresponding to calendar year 2023, accumulated electricity consumption was 15,295.2 million kWh, which is 6.2% more than the same period last year 2022, when consumption was estimated at 14,397.8 million kWh.
