EU to ban some single-use plastic packaging from 2030

Every European citizen throws away 109 kg of packaging per year. If the situation remains the same then this figure will increase to 209 kg in 2030. That is why the European Commission proposed a regulation to reduce this type of waste and this Monday it reached an agreement with the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, who must ratify it, with the aim of gradually eliminating the use of packaging. Use is to be reduced by (5% in 2030, 10% in 2035 and 15% in 2040). Additionally, it will ban certain single-use plastic packaging from January 1, 2030.

The new rules are intended to make all packaging recyclable in the EU, although this will be developed later, and to ban those that are harmful to health when they come in contact with food – so-called persistent chemicals (PFAS). Another veto is the use of very light plastic bags (less than 15 microns), although this includes some exceptions, such as for hygiene reasons or bulk foods in which waste is avoided.

The restaurant sector will also be affected by governments encouraging restaurants, canteens, bars, cafes and caterers to provide tap water in reusable or rechargeable format (where available, for free or at a reduced charge).

In the case of reusable containers for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, a minimum of 10% has been established by 2030, although Member States may allow a five-year margin for compliance.

The new rules cover the entire life cycle of packaging and establish a new recycling system according to which, in 2029, 90% of single-use plastic and metal drinks containers up to three liters will be collected separately.
