Family medicine, pride of Cuba, is honored in Cienfuegos › Cuba › Granma

On January 4, 1984, the Family Doctor and Nurse Program was inaugurated, a valuable idea of our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz to create a different doctor and a new specialist, with the purpose of reaching new levels of health and satisfaction of the population.

Before the commemoration of the date, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, sent “a big hug” to the doctors and nurses “who are in the neighborhoods, who always have their offices open to care for the neighbors” as part of one of the most humane and decisive programs created by Fidel.

By virtue of its comprehensive results in said care front, Cienfuegos hosted the national act for the 39th anniversary of the so-called Family Medicine, a meeting held at the Serafín Ruiz de Zárate university polyclinic.

The Vice Minister of Public Health, Dr. Reinol Delfín García Moreira, recognized in the national act that the province of Cienfuegos shows favorable indicators in the Maternal and Child Care Program, with a mortality rate of 4.3 per thousand live births, and the non-occurrence of maternal deaths.

The comprehensive work of family doctors and nurses also stands out, in a renovated network of family care institutions, with a professional cadre marked by its stability.

As was remarked, equity, equality and human solidarity continue among the founding precepts of Fidel Castro’s illustrious idea of family medicine, whose anniversary was commemorated with the attendance of the member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Party in the province, Marydé Fernandez Lopez.

As the date coincides with the Day of the Cuban Hygienist-Epidemiologist (in homage to the birth of the eminent public health specialist Juan Guiteras Gener, who in 1906 described the first cases of dengue in our country), the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power conferred the Shield of the City of Cienfuegos to Dr. Francisco Durán García, Cuban symbol of the fight against COVID-19, an epidemic that put the family medicine model to the test.
