Jerusalem, (EFE).- Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau, informed Egypt and Qatar this Monday that the Palestinian Islamic group has accepted his proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas made the announcement in a brief statement, giving no further details, after it ordered about 100,000 Palestinians in eastern Rafah to evacuate the city in view of a possible ground attack by Israeli forces.
“Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Hamas movement, called with the Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and the Minister of Intelligence of Egypt, Abbas Kamel, and informed them of the approval of his proposal by the Hamas movement. A ceasefire agreement,” the Palestinian group said.
At the moment the details of the proposal are not known, nor is the official position of the Israeli authorities, however, according to media such as the public channel Kan or Channel 12 News, the agreement accepted by Hamas has not received the green light from Israel. ,
Media cited Israeli government officials as saying that the offer that Hamas accepted was made unilaterally by Egypt, and is not being considered at the moment until details are clarified.
This morning, in fact, thousands of Palestinians in the southern city of Rafah received messages urging them to evacuate the Khan Younis area, raising concerns over the possibility that the army would soon launch its announced ground offensive in southern Gaza.
Shortly before Hamas’ message, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant had assured in a meeting with relatives of the hostages that the army would continue efforts to free them even after the ground attack on Rafah begins.
The Islamist group today warned Israeli forces that any military operation in Rafah “will be no picnic” and that the group’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, is ready to “protect our people”.
