Stoneshield, the management company headed by Juan Pepa and Felipe Morenes, takes another step in its commitment to the health sciences sector and prepares the first science and innovation “hub” in Catalonia.
The company acquired a total of five properties in Barcelona with a total area of 75,000 m2. Among which stand out are the former headquarters of Mediapro in Esplugues de Llobregat and the building of the pharmaceutical company Bayer in Sant Joan Despi. Its goal is to invest more than €200 million to transform these facilities into a “campus dedicated to life sciences and innovation.”
Although the specific amount Stoneshield paid for the property is unknown, the market has estimated the purchase price of the former Mediapro headquarters at €35–40 million. In particular, the building Il·lumina, located at Calle Gaspar Fabregas and Roses, 81 and with a useful area of about 20,000 m2, which has so far been in the hands of Tikehau Capital And Ireit Global.
On the other hand, the pharmaceutical company Bayer has decided to transfer ownership of the Sant Joan Despí building, where its headquarters is located, to Spain. Despite the sale, he will remain the main occupant, occupying more than half the space.
Stoneshield made these acquisitions through Deeplabs, its life sciences and innovation platform. This campus, specializing in science and life sciences, called BaSID (Barcelona Science Innovation District), will see an investment of more than 200 million euros.
The area in which BaSID is launched is located The Barcelona Science Park is nearby, as are major companies in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. as well as the hospital and university environment, which will allow this scientific “hub” to collaborate more closely with the talent and researchers from said centers.
As explained Javier de Pablo, co-CEO of DeepLabs:
The goal is to “promote Barcelona as a benchmark in the space of science and innovation.” We are about to open the first private life sciences center in Catalonia. BaSID will offer advanced laboratories and scientific facilities for all companies, organizations and research centers that require premises of this type; which are currently in short supply throughout Spain. Our goal is that we can guarantee the best conditions for leading companies in the field of science and innovation in a collaborative environment that goes beyond the facilities themselves and promotes collaboration between scientists, universities, the entrepreneurial world and leading companies in their field. “.With this project in Barcelona, DeepLabs has strengthened its position as a reference in the sector after developing MaSID, the first life sciences district in Spain, where many companies in this sector are concentrated, such as Takeda, Fresenius Medical Care, Xople, Med-EL, Deimos, Cantabria Labs, Algenex, GMV, Life length and others.
MaSID has two campuses.one of them is located in Three songsin Madrid, covers an area of 70,000 m2 and consists of 15 buildings equipped with the latest laboratories, development areas and specialized services, and has a community of more than 3,000 professionals specialized in the fields of biotechnology, aeronautics or biomedicine, etc. It also has 15,000 m2 in Fuencarral district
close to Madrid Nuevo Norte, the five towers and the Cles factory, and with excellent transport links to universities, research centers and hospitals.“This concept of a science and technology district that DeepLabs is developing has taken root in other countries, but in Spain it is a pioneer,” says the Pepa y Morenés manager.
