Sales of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Deflate in Japan

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the biggest releases of the year. The PlayStation exclusive, however, does not seem to be performing favorably, as shown by the sales of the title in Japan.

According to sales figures from Famitsu (via Gematsu), Square Enix‘s new game went from selling 262,656 units in its opening week to just 24,482 copies in just its second week on the market.

What is most striking is that the second part of the remake trilogy sold extremely little, if we remember that the original installment debuted selling just over 700,000 copies in its opening week (3 days) and 70,000 copies in the following week.

The circumstances surrounding both launches must be taken into account, such as the fact that this figure only considers physical copies, as well as that PlayStation 5 has a model that only works with digital copies of games. Likewise, Final Fantasy VII Remake went on sale in the last stage of the PlayStation 4, when there was a broader player base compared to the PlayStation 5 (3.5 years on the market).

UNICORN OVERLORD DEBUTS AT THE TOP OF THE SALES CHART IN JAPAN

This low figure earned it its fall from first place, which was taken from it by Unicorn Overlord, the new title from the Japanese studio Vanillaware, which had a modest debut with just over 74,000 units sold if we count all its versions ( PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch ).

This is good news for Vanillaware, because, although they may seem like low numbers for any AAA production, it is a good amount for the studio. To put it in context, its previous title debuted in December 2019, selling 34,608 copies in Japan (it only debuted on PlayStation 4 ).

On this occasion, the circumstances were favorable for the Vanillaware title, since the sales figure was enough to be at the top of the podium, even leaving behind Hatsune Miku and her boxing game.
