Sara Ortega extends contract until 2026

January 15 from 2024

Athletic and Sara Ortega (18 years old) entered into an agreement to extend the player’s contract for two seasons, until June 30, 2026, with the possibility of extending it for another. A promising and versatile football player, Surigorri, world champion under 17 (2022) and European champion under 19 (2023), is developing very confidently in the elite. She is an integral part of David Aznar’s plans, with whom she played 13 of 14 official matches.

Ortega, a native of Logroño, began technical training in Lezama when she was only 11 years old and has been associated with the Athletic Club since 2019, when she began playing in the cadet category. A year later, she moved up to the Women’s C category and even played in some games for the reserve team. In the 2021-2022 season, despite her youth, she became a decisive player in the second team, playing many minutes and scoring five goals. In January 2022, Iraia Iturregui made his debut in the first team, shortly before he turned 17 years old in a Cup match. In that match against Racing de Santander in Torrelavega, he scored his first goal as a Lioness. Already that season, he took part in 11 matches as a starter and four as a substitute, scoring a goal and still alternating his participation with the reserve team remaining in the 1st RFEF.

Without a doubt, she is promoted to the First Division this year and, despite her youth, is an important player for David Aznar, providing play mainly on the wing and even scoring a goal against Sporting de Huelva in Lezama. Surigorri, who responds well in several positions on the field, was very happy to sign her extension in San Mamés: “My dream is to continue working at this club, where I joined when I was 14 years old. I’ve completed all of Lezama’s categories: Cadet, C and B, and now it’s time to fight to play more minutes in the First Division and continue to grow as a footballer. “I feel confident as a coach and it’s going to be a very exciting season.”

Here’s how Sarah described her attitude towards Athletic: “I feel very comfortable here, I am very grateful for the trust they have always shown in me. The sport is different, and experiencing it from the inside is super special, it’s all about unity, both in the lower categories and in the first teams, men’s and women’s. “.
