The cruelty and beauty of the world we live in are depicted in images

There are many photography competitions in the world, but among them the most notable one we find is Sony World Photography Awards Who have long been recognizing the work of photographers everywhere. Like every year, around this time, the World Photography Organization has announced the winners of its most recent edition, specifically, the 2024 edition.

The top prize, officially called Photographer of the Year, has been awarded to photographer Juliette Pavy (France) for her series ‘Spiralcampaign: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilization of Greenlandic Women’. It is a work that addresses involuntary birth control led by the Danish authorities in Greenland in the 1960s and 1970s.

A contest with multiple categories (and prizes)

Paavi has been selected by the jury among ten winners in the business category, which were announced today along with the second and third place winners in each category. The winner of Photographer of the Year will receive a $25,000 prize as well as a collection of Sony photography equipment. You will also have the opportunity to present a new set of works in the 2025 edition of the event. The Open and Sustainability awards will each receive $5,000. However, the first will also receive Sony equipment and will be able to showcase their work.

If you want to see the images, you can do so at the Sony World Photography Awards 2024 exhibition Somerset House, London, from 19 April. The building, located on the banks of the Thames, will be home to the winning works of the competition promoted by the World Photography Organisation, as well as the finalists and shortlist. Professional Category Winner

A panel of ten experts chose the winners in this category. To participate, you must submit five to ten images that demonstrate technical proficiency and a solid approach to narrative. All winners in this category will receive a Sony Digital Imaging Kit.

This year Kathleen Orlinski (United States) was selected as the winner of the 2024 Sustainability Award for her series America’s First Wilderness. His work considers the landscape, wildlife, and people of the Gila Wilderness Park in southwestern New Mexico.

Open Photographer of the Year, Students and Youth

Liam Mann (United Kingdom) is the overall winner of the Open category for his photograph ‘Moonrise Sprites over Storr’. LUCA Sint Lucas School of Arts Brussels’ Kaine Louis (Belgium) has been awarded Student Photographer of the Year. Daniel Murray (United Kingdom, 15 years old) is Young Photographer of the Year.

Photographer of the Year

As we speak, the highest prize has gone to Juliette Paavi for ‘Spiralcampagan: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilization of Greenlandic Women’. This French photographer’s work traces the beginnings of an involuntary births project that led to many Inuit women, some as young as 12, receiving intrauterine implants without consent for several years.
