In this sense, WhatsApp warns about new scam circulating online and it becomes viral among cybercriminals. This new criminal modus operandi involves stealing our information while using a screen sharing app during video calls.

How to steal data through a video call on WhatsApp

The scam in question takes place on the instant messaging platform WhatsApp when the scammer initiates a video call with the user. During a video call, the scammer fakes technical problems, claiming that his camera is not working properly. So, prompts the user to share their screen to solve this supposed problem. Although this action is presented as a solution to a technical problem, it is actually a trap for the user.

If the victim decides to share their screen, the fraudster can observe everything that is displayed on the user’s device. This allows you, for example, to view security codes sent via SMS. With access to this code, a cybercriminal can take control of a WhatsApp user’s account and transfer it to another device without realizing the situation.

Fraudsters usually use this method on people who do not have sufficient knowledge about new technologies, thereby increasing their vulnerability to this type of cybercrime.
