27 February 2024 Measles cases rise in London

As of the week ending February 4, doctors have identified 959 cases suspected of measles V England and Wales this year, including 335 in the last week. This includes 123 suspected cases in London, 42 of which were diagnosed last week.

This is by far the highest number of suspected measles cases reported in the first five weeks of the year in more than a decade. During the same period in 2023, only 67 suspected cases were identified. So far in 2022, 45 cases of infection have been reported.

In London, cases have been reported in every council area except Waltham Forest. Until now, Brent has recorded the most infections with 17. This is more than Harrow (eight) and Ealing (eight) combined, the two London boroughs with the second highest number of cases.
