Bodies found are “possibly” those of missing surfers in Mexico

(CNN) — Mexican authorities said Sunday that three bodies found in Baja California state earlier this week are those of people who died and are “probably” three missing surfers from the United States and Australia.

The state attorney general, Maria Elena Andrade, said at a press conference that forensic examination showed that all three bodies had gunshot wounds to the heads and were believed to be those of American Jack Carter Rode and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson .

The three friends are believed to have been surfing and camping near the city of Ensenada, about 100 kilometers south of the border city of Tijuana, when they disappeared on April 29.

“Presumably, the three bodies belong to the three surfers, but the family is still in the process of identification,” Andrade said.

He said it has been determined that the three bodies are those of those killed, but they have not yet been formally identified.

Relatives of the surfers arrived in Tijuana on Saturday and will examine the bodies today and Sunday afternoon, Andrade said, adding that he expected the identification process to be completed “in the next few hours.”

Three bodies were found on a cliff south of the municipality of Ensenada, according to two security sources and a member of an activist group specializing in the search for missing people.

A local police source told CNN that officers also found the men’s truck burned about 65 kilometers from where the bodies were found.
