Russian Deputy Defense Minister arrested for taking bribe

The Russian Investigative Committee reported this Tuesday the arrest of the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Timur Ivanov Who is accused of taking bribe.

According to a statement from the Investigative Committee collected by TASS, Ivanov is accused of committing the crime of “accepting a bribe” included in Article 290 of the Criminal Code and which does not provide further details.

The crimes contemplated in that article are subject to penalties ranging from large fines to Jail sentence of more than 10 years.

Ivanov is the target of sanctions by the European Union for actions related to his responsibilities in the acquisition of goods and construction of military facilities.

The Anti-Corruption Foundation, created by dissident Alexei Navalny (who died in a prison in the Russian Arctic in February), links him to construction projects in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, conquered by Russian troops after months of fierce fighting.

According to that report, the deputy minister and his wife divorced to avoid EU sanctions.

Ivanov, 48 and born in Moscow, worked at companies in the country’s energy and fuel sector, served as deputy governor of the Moscow region and was named ‘number two’ in defense in 2016.
